How to Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors: Growing Vegetables from Seed

Starting your vegetable seeds early indoors in your hobby farm can help you get a big jump on your growing season with quicker yields from your crop. Starting seeds in the ground when spring comes can take longer to see results and also lost crops due to poor seed germination from lack of water or over watering from rain.

When seeds start to germinate this is the time when the plants are most vulnerable to temperature changes and Improper watering. Controlling these growing conditions outside can be very difficult and time consuming.

Starting your vegetable seeds inside will allow you to control the growing conditions for better seed germination at the same time allowing you to bring large health seedling to your vegetable gardening allowing you to get a months head start on your growing season.

How to start seeds indoors

How to germinate seeds

  1. Select the NON GMO seeds you would like to grow
  2. Pot with seed-starting mix
  3. Containers with drainage holes
  4. Plant seeds at the proper depth check seed package
  5. Water
  6. After sowing, set the containers in a warm location
  7. Keep seed-starting mix moist, I use a spray bottle

Starting seeds in trays

Fill the seed tray with seed starting mix or small containers. Lightly press down on each planting square or use another tray to evenly press down the soil mix about 1/4 inch from the top. Sprinkle a two or three seed in each growing area in the tray. If more than one sprouts you can remove the smaller ones. Cover the seeds with a light covering of starting mix and water. Place the tray in warm location.

Warming pads or grow lights can be used for germination. Check daily and Keep the soil damp with a spray bottle. If the soil becomes to wet or dry the seeds may not germinate.
